Description Item Specs

The Tanto first made its appearance around the 8th century during the Heian Period. These first Tantos were almost always used as functional weapons and as a result did not have much have much artistic quality. Another result of the their functional use was that not many survived from this period. It was during this time, and the years up until the 16th century, that the Tanto was worn with the Tachi as the Daisho of the Samurai. Women would also sometimes wear a smaller version of the Tanto in their Obi for self defense.

This is a reproduction inspired by the ornate Tantos of the Late Edo period, named Asuka. The Tanto has been authentically forged with meticulous attention to detail. All the fittings and materials used in the Tanto's construction are genuine materials. The Tanto is full tang and comes razor sharp.
Features
  • The Tanto has been forged in the Unokubi-zukuri style with a single edge, straight back, and a raised Shinogi that tapers to the Mune. The Mune ends at the Okissaki. A Bohi has been added to the beginning of the Shinogi.
  • The blade is full tang and comes razor sharp.
  • Saya: The Saya is constructed of hard wood with a deep black lacquered high gloss finish. An brass fitting rests in the lower half of the Saya, cast to resemble Sakura Blossoms. The Sageo is blue cotton cord wrapped around a brass Kurigata. The Koi-guchi is also brass with more Sakura Blossoms in relief.
  • Tsuka: The Habaki is a single one piece brass construction with the Musashi symbol engraved into the metal. The Fuchi is the completion of the picture started by the Koiguchi. When the Tanto is sheathed the Fuchi and Koiguchi make a beautiful scene of Sakura Blossoms on a branch.
  • The Tsuka is constructed of two pieces of hard wood over the tang of the blade. Samegawa (ray skin) has been wrapped over the wood with a Blue Cotton Ito wrapped over the Same. A single bamboo Mekugi secures the tang of the blade into the Tsuka. A brass Menuki adorns each side of the Tsuka. The Kashira is bright brass with another scene of Sakura Blossoms in bold relief.
