Description Item Specs

The Shirasaya is a sword with a very long history in Japanese sword making. The Shirasaya first came into use when the sword smiths needed a place to store their sword blades. The smiths used a wooden sheath to store the sword blades until they could be fitted.

Later the Shirasaya was used by the Samurai to conceal their swords when sword carrying was banned in Japan. With the arrival of the 21st century the Shirasaya has started to make a come back as a stylized sword.
Features
  • Blade: The blade of the sword is constructed from carbon steel and features a visible temper line. This blade is unique for swords within this price range because the blade is handmade, evidence of this can be seen in the kissaki (or tip of the sword) which has a tapered design and boshi. The sword comes very sharp, but it has the capability to be sharpened further if desired (we send the swords as are). The blade is full tang and comes with a straight edge design.
  • Saya (Scabbard): The saya is wooden with a dark stained finish. The saya has been crafted to contour the shape of the blade. And fits seamlessly into the handle.
  • Tsuka (Handle): The handle is the same stained wood as the saya. When the sword is sheathed the handle and saya look like one solid piece. The handle has been crafted to contour to the tang of the sword, and the shape of your hands. A single pin secures the tang in the handle of the sword.

Like all my other Musashi blades, this one is outstanding for the price.  It makes an excellent display/costume sword as-is, and with  a little work would make a good fighting blade too.  The handles on these swords don't seem sturdy enough for much combat, but after replacing the handle, you'd have a good one.

This handle only has one bamboo pin, unlike most of the other Musashis, and strength could be a problem.  Also, the two parts of the walking stick don't quite meet up perfectly, but the flaw is very minor.
