Heraldry is the art of creating, assigning and marshalling a coat of arms. The origins of heraldry are not certain but it became known during the 12th century. It is commonly believed that the art form became popular as a way to recognize knights when they had their helmets on. The knight's coat of arms was a inherited privilege and was sometimes as important to the knights as his land. Each symbol or color of the coat of arms held some significance to the family it originated from.
